Keto vs. Paleo Diet: What’s the Difference?

Share

Your eye-liner may be on fleek and your highlighter on point, but if you just can’t fit into that little black dress you had been saving up for, then you simply won’t feel all too good about your glam up!

If you take your tales of woe to your friends, some might recommend Paleo diet, while others will be pro Keto diet, leaving you confused between the two!

The battle of Keto vs. Paleo does not have a winner yet. However, if you are wondering which one is more suitable for you, then you need to understand them individually. So let’s get started, girls!

What is Paleo Diet?

If you are the old-school, connect-with-your-roots kind of a girl, then you have a lot more in common with the Paleo diet. This type of diet is based on the ideology of consuming meals in the same way your forefathers would have in the primordial times. That’s why, it is also called, “The Cavemen Diet”

Since the focus is on a diet pattern similar to that was consumed in ancient times, Paleo eliminates any foods that are a product of the Agricultural Revolution. This is why the consumption options you have in this diet include:

  • Fish (which can be caught via hook)
  • Meat (chicken, turkey, duck and etc.)
  • Eggs
  • Fruits (with low sugar levels)
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Oils (from coconut, avocado, olive, tallow and etc.)
  • Vegetables (excluding corn, which is classified as a grain)
  • Non-processed sweeteners (honey, coconut sugar, maple syrup and etc.)

You are probably super impressed by the healthiness of the Paleo diet. While it may fit your personality, it is not necessarily the healthiest diet to consume. But thanks to the scientists and fitness freaks, you still have a safer diet option to count on—Keto!

What is Keto Diet?

Keto is to the fitness world what Michael Jackson was to Pop music—legendary! Not only has Keto ascended to the top amongst all the diets ever introduced, but it has also maintained this place without any chances of other diets trumping it in the near future.

If you are new to the concept of Ketogenic diet, then check out my, “The Most Comprehensive Beginners Guide to KETO“, which I posted sometimes ago. But I will give you a short recap. Keto diet focuses on regulating the macronutrient consumption to move your body’s reliance on carbs for energy to fats. This is why, in a Ketogenic diet, your nutrient consumption should be:

  • Carbohydrates: 5-10%
  • Proteins: 20-30%
  • Fat: 60-80%

What Is the Difference Between Keto and Paleo?

While these diets may have some similarities such as the consumption of meats and elimination of starchy-veggies or added sugar, they are worlds apart in other aspects.

Some of the common differences between these diets are:

  • In Paleo, you cannot consume dairy products as they are the results of the Agricultural Revolution and oppose the essence of the Caveman’s ideology. On the other hand, Keto promotes reliance on cheese and yogurt for fat intake.
  • In Paleo, you consume all kinds of fruits along with potatoes as they are whole foods that have been consumed since the beginning of time. But in Keto, you must avoid fruits and potatoes as they are rich in carbohydrates that slow down your ketosis.

Deciding whether to choose Keto or Paleo may be a little challenging for, but if you are here to follow by advice, then Keto is the right path to tread on and I would recommend it. You can read all about the Keto diet in my other posts!
